one of the most depressing films ever made.
what did i just watch on a monday night? a harrowing experience that quite literally ripped me into its world and made me fall in love with a strong yet exhausted peruvian elderly couple.
we follow them attempt to navigate their quiet lives while waiting for their son to return to their home five thousand meters hoisted in the air. in the meantime, their system they have set up slowly begins to crumble, despite their presence in the farming and live stock process.
when i first read the synopsis, i was prepared for this film to be focused on the return or lack of return of the son. i was completely wrong. the film slowly breaks you down by highlighting the connection between the couple and how they thrive off of each other to survive. it creates a sense of a barrier for each other to lean on.
then, it snaps that presence. brutally. with the death of her food source, and more importantly her husband, Phaxi is left empty and lonely. so, on the brink of death, she walks. this is the greatest final scene the film could have delivered. it left me hollow and depressed, and this is the only film I have ever cried to.
a generationally depressing story that will stick with me for years, possibly my entire life.
