Lora Hart manages to land a job in a hospital as a trainee nurse. Upon completion of her training she goes to work as a night nurse for two small children who seem to be very sick, though something much more sinister is going on.

Directed by William A Wellman, director of the first Best Picture winner, Wings, Night Nurse is a rather bold pre-code film starring the ever stunning Barbara Stanwyck, along with Clark Gable. Films from the pre-code era will always be an interesting watch, as I’m always taken aback by just how much they show. Obviously they would never go as far to show nudity, although Wellman did experiment with that when Clara Bow had a moment in Wings where she was fully undressed. But this film still shows nurses disrobing and sleeping in the same bed together. But the plot of this film takes a sinister turn, one that took me by surprise and was really effective. While Night Nurse isn’t a great film in retrospect, I think it’s a solid pre-code era film that’s both daring and entertaining.
Side note: As a fan of the musical Grease, I was surprised to find out that Joan Blondell, who plays Nurse Maloney in this film, was actually the old head waitress at Frosty Palace!
