“don’t cry over spilled milk, that’s what i always say”
i liked this film a lot more than i thought i would.. a group of teens have a little getaway to an island (out of all the places in the world they pick this deserted island..), they break into a random house (for some reason??) and just touch everything in their sight, the entire house is stylised as vintage and old school, having loads of furniture from the 1920s. then these two puritans named ‘ma’ and ‘pa’ welcome their guests, they are shown to be really eccentric with traditional values. they have 3 kids, and they’re all middle aged. this psychotic family kills off all the teens one by one, until only one remains. i will always love a horror film where the setting is really isolated, they’re all on an island and it’s near impossible to get off the island, they trapped with an evil old fashioned family. there’s a nice build of suspense and the family is genuinely disturbing and off putting. i think the performances were the main feat of this film, the acting is so over the top and the actors give it their all, the puritans were so demented and they gave oddball, especially their adult daughter fanny (great name) that was just so entertaining. cynthia is probably the best character aside the puritans, she’s nothing special but she ends them in the end so for that she has my full respect. girlboss honesty. on first glance this seems like an average back woods teen slasher, but it just adds a little more camp. i just like the really unsettling atmosphere of the stand-alone eccentric traditional family with adult kids who all act 12: with their obsession with dead babies, blood and necrophilia. there’s a nice psychological element while also adding twists to differentiate this and other slashers of its time period. i really don’t care about the low production value, but it’s uses cinematography and commentary to represent religious conservatism and paranoia, and also psychological trauma. some turn offs may be the fact that it’s very much a slow burn, the pacing is slow at the start and also some the acting from the teenage side feels uninspired or just lifeless. there’s decent kills, but personally i would like more blood shed :( i also love how the cover of this film is inspired by the painting by the same title.. that’s pretty cool
