Not by any means the most perfect directorial debut which I’ll get into but it does show many facets of potential from Alex. In this film, he definitely has a knack for weaving in some sentimental moments in here which admittedly really work on me at times. My problem with the film though happened to lie on the pacing which felt a bit awkward. While this movie did have a big handful of sprawls in emotion and deeper thematic topics, I feel like the narrative only goes into them to such a short extent that leaves a lot to be desired at times.
It sort of feels unfocused and distracted from its more captivating plot ideas and messages at times with it trying to capture this accurate more suface level aspect of teen life which makes it feel a bit meandering at times. While I do think that was an important aspect to keep this film more grounded for a coming of age, it feels like they dug the sole of this film into it a bit much to the point where they’re wasn’t much room to spare for more deeper and important backstories to fully form until the last act which hit like an absolute freight train to Alex’s credit. Also not to mention, sex scenes In the film at times felt a bit overbearing and unnecessary in length.
Now to get to the positives, the acting firstly was great. Alex Wolff by all means gives such an emotionally charged performance that elavated this script. Mike Epps in his short stints was also great as well with the chemistry him and Alex had on screen in their fare share of emotional moments. They just both feel so sincere and heartfelt, doing their characters all the justice. The whole cast here really is fantastic at playing their role in the narrative. The film also says a lot about loneliness especially during teen years
I feel like a lot of teens including me have a hard time searching for sincere friends who actually truly care about your problems and personal struggles to the full extent. Nowadays in teen life most just care about the next dopamine rush of fun rather than helping someone out of things like sadness or depression. This film also goes into a bit how teens desperately always seek validation from people in the midst of the search for their identity in the formative years of adolescence. So safe to say a far from perfect film, but definitely shows Alex has quite a bit of promise as a filmmaker and I’m curious to see what he does next in the director’s seat.
