"White Savior" trope, but not as much as The Help. Great performances, well-crafted, and it blows my mind to think that racists from that era are still alive today — still spreading that vitriol. My blood is boiling, but it was a good movie.

Give agency to the Black women behind the movement and tries to tell their story with some emotional depth, and it also I think smartly deals with three types of white folks: the “progressive” Miriam who ends up helping, her husband norm who is a “moderate” but then joins citizens counsels, and his segregationist klansmen brother. It átales a good position that Miriam isn’t the one saving the day (although what she ends up doing is actual action) and that her husband actively resists it (because he most certainly would have!!)

Ultimately this is still way too bogged down in the focus on the white family and especially the daughters narration (the movie is a lot better when it’s not there!).

Definitely a better POV than a fair amount of oscarbaity race movies but there’s still so much more to be strived for with Black creatives telling their own stories that give true emotional depth and agency to their characters.

We watched this in class and honestly, I couldn't see why people think it's good. First off, it's acting is just downright awful. The actors don't seem interested or give emotion to the characters. The dialogue of the film made me cringe and it is just to ridiculous. It's style is fine and the pacing is so and so and some fine music here and there. But my main problem is the actual message. The film was to be about a historic event (The Montgomery Bus Boycott) and what they did with it is barely mention it. It shows Spacek and Goldberg's families instead of actually showing the outcome. And that was just horrible. Besides that it was boring and slow I just couldn't get into it.
