I haven't read the book so I didn't really know what I was expecting, but this was still certainly not what I was expecting (though not in a bad way at all). Lon Chaney Jr. is really the real main character here. He garners all the emotion and you can't help but feel for him. The scenes with him have so much impact and I could say so much about the ending. Burgess Meredith and Chaney Jr. work so well together. It's just an amazing film. 1939 was truly an incredible year.
I also was very excited when I saw Aaron Copland's name in the opening credits and he did not disappoint.
