Miklós Rózsa's score was absolutely stunning and I am slightly obsessed with Robert Stephen's performance. I'm not sure how I feel about Mycroft or Watson in this film, and I sort of lost interest in the main plot. I went into this film knowing very little, and was very much not expecting the events of the first forty minutes. Holmes' choices are interesting, particularly in pretending that he and Watson are a couple so as to avoid the attentions of the russian ballerina who wanted him to impregnate her. Despite his closer relationships with women both seen and discussed in this film it is still unclear whether Holmes is romantically/sexually attracted to them. Deliberate or not, this version of Holmes can easily be read as queer, whether in being aromantic, asexual, gay or some combination of the three. The only quote that particularly stands out to me from this film is "you know what they say about us, if there's one thing more deplorable than our cooking it's our love making" purely because I am so confused by it.
