A sadistic Daimyo (feudal lord) rapes a woman and murders both her and her husband, but even when one of his own vassals commits suicide to bring attention to the crime, the matter is quickly hushed up. Not only will there be no punishment, but because the Daimyo is the Shogun's younger brother, he will soon be appointed to a high political position from which he could wreak even more havoc. Convinced that the fate of the Shogunate hangs in the balance, a plot is hatched to assassinate the Daimyo. The two most brilliant strategic minds of their generation find themselves pitted against each other; one is tasked to defend a man he despises, and has a small army at his disposal. The other is given a suicide mission, and has 12 brave men. They are the 13 Assassins.

Strangely uninteresting …
Copied a lot of blueprints here
Hot in the Harakiri-fication of this era of Japanese cinema at least with its set up
Proper Seven Samurai homage with the action
But all falling short of what really made those so good
Just no care for the characters or thoroughness of the plot
Felt pretty loose and a bit hand wavy tbh
And the visuals weren’t all that appealing either
So surprisingly just a bit bland
No sins I’d say, nothing actually wrong in my eyes
Just MID !
For lack of a better word MID I’d say this was MID to slightly maybe even good
Fun yes I think so ? I don’t know that much I just need to fix my ship and get back to my home planet

No stain to its influences but not a service to them either beyond just trying to be like them bc they’re so good
I got sad seeing everyone only talk about Miike’s remake but im excited to see what it’s got in store
Bc if it does anything especially interesting it’ll beat this one out in a fair few regards
I thought this was be more iconic in my head but it’s really just the sum of its parts
Just exactly what you get when you do this and nothing more
Can’t complain it’s just this

I'm rating this the same as the remake because they're practically the same exact film.
I like the portrayal of Shinza and Hanbei a lot more in this. The back and forth chess match is a lot more interesting compared to the remake. Obviously though, the finale fight doesn't come close to Miike's version.
