During the movie I suddenly remembered that I had actually seen it years ago on TV, but honestly, this hit way harder than I remembered. It deals with such a delicate subject, and I genuinely think it’s the kind of story that needs to be talked about more. The idea that a justice system can fail people this badly is incredibly sad and genuinely infuriating.
Technically, I thought the movie was really solid. It has that documentary or biopic style that I always enjoy, where everything feels grounded and focused more on the characters and the weight of the story than flashy filmmaking. The soundtrack also works really well and supports the emotional moments without overdoing them.
And honestly, I don’t even know who impressed me more between Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx because both of them are phenomenal here. You completely feel the desperation, the anger, the exhaustion and the determination from both sides. Michael B. Jordan does such a good job showing someone desperately trying to help through a broken system, while Jamie Foxx absolutely destroys emotionally in several scenes. Their performances carry so much weight that some moments become genuinely hard to watch.
Brie Larson is also really good here, and honestly, I’m tired of the constant hate she gets because she genuinely gives strong performances a lot of the time, including in this movie. The supporting cast overall is incredibly solid too, especially Tim Blake Nelson, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Rob Morgan, Rafe Spall and Denitra Isler.
The story itself is brutal, especially because it’s based on real cases. Knowing that makes every scene hit even harder. I also think the movie tells the story really well because it takes its time with everything. Nothing feels rushed, and the film gives proper importance to the moments that truly deserve it. By the end you’re basically sitting there trying not to cry.
Honestly, this is a fantastic movie with a really powerful and important message. It will absolutely make you suffer, but at the same time it also reminds you that there are still people willing to fight for others, and that little bit of humanity and hope is what makes the whole story so impactful.
