I hate sand.

I found this on a weird west list, and I go back in forth on whether it’s a western. Its certainly making nods to the western genre, but the extra folk horror flavour keep just stopping me from sticking with that. Must a western be American? Set in America? Big questions, but this unessay is due. 

Gorgeous and spooky film. Something very theatrical in the lighting, and I mean specifically that experimental theatre lighting you get when you need to represent some very big things with a very small lighting rig. Not a knock, that’s my favourite stuff.

There’s something about the cinematography that has to be said. The way the desert is portrayed is almost eldritch like. Especially the dream sequences. Were some of the acting cheesy, yes. But it almost added to the personality of the film and I loved it. I’m so happy I got to see the blue ray version, the visuals were so vibrant and breathtaking. I also loved the incorporation of African mysticism within the film. Highly recommend the watch.
