I want to preface this by saying that I was excited for this remake. As a former “horse girl” the original Black Beauty had been one of my favourite movies, and seeing it be remade as a genderbent version voiced by Kate Winslet excited me. Unfortunately, this movie left me disappointed. The heart of the original Black Beauty was lost, with scenes that were meant to be tense feeling empty and rushed, character development done half baked and unjustified, and of course, a forced love story. I expected there to be changes since it’s a remake and not a copy, but this remake of such a heartwarming story is lackluster, and leaves behind the core messages of Black Beauty, replaced by yet another “horse girl movie” about an untameable horse being tamed by a sad girl on a poor ranch, only for the ranch to be sold and them separated until their inevitable reunion. Disappointing.
