If you only liked I Saw the TV Glow you’ll probably hate this, if you liked We’re All Going to the World’s Fair then this probably will be more up your alley. The first half is less a documentary and more of a clipshow of what the YouTube scene was like at the start of the Slenderman craze, complete with a full minute of the infamous Jeff the Killer vs. Slenderman rap battle. The second half is a look into the same scene in the aftermath of the Payton Leutner stabbing with videos of some truly horrendous viewpoints of people around that time that almost make you lose faith in humanity. Brilliant.

Wonderful. Hilarious, haunting, truly sad, this doc takes you on a rollercoaster. The means by which this is conveyed, basically just being a compilation of YouTube videos, makes this feel so real, so human, and makes all the points being made hit that much more. The monologue towards the end about that young man's experience with Tulpas genuinely got me choked up. How internet culture can become a place for us to hide when our living situation stifles everything out of us. Just being excited by something as bizarre as Slender Man can keep us going in so many ways.
A magnificent time capsule of what it was like being a young person in the early age of YouTube and user-created content, for better and worse. Man this Schoenbrun person has a pretty neat style, I wonder what they'll cook up next.
