Chandramukhi is a film from my childhood that I absolutely loved. I've never watched the original Malayalam film though, so my views on Chandramukhi are about it as a separate film.
The plot is convoluted but very intriguing, because the horror elements are established very early on. As the story progresses, it keeps your attention by diverting suspicion from one character to the next, while interweaving comedy, romance and musical numbers. My favourite parts of the film are the montage scene where Saravanan explains what's happening to Senthil and Viswanathan, and the 'Raa Raa' song and final bit with Chandramukhi. Overall, though, the cinematography is excellent, as are the soundtrack and costumes.
Rajini is awesome as Saravanan, and has great chemistry with everyone he interacts with. He has a certain style when delivering dialogue that ultimately makes Saravanan a more likeable character, and he's adept at switching between various genres. Jyothika is exceptional as Ganga/Chandramukhi, and her performance gave me the creeps as a kid (props to the lighting and camerawork too). She's great at portraying the distinct differences between the two personalities and showing how they gradually meld together as the story progresses. Vadivelu's comedy is fantastic; his timing and delivery are unmatched, and his scenes with Rajini are perfect comedic relief. Prabhu is pretty good too, although there were a few moments where I feel he was overacting slightly, and the rest of the cast are similarly decent.
Chandramukhi is a classic (to me) and it certainly still holds up very well, it's everything you'd want in a film and will remain a firm favourite.
