A delectably gothic Czech new wave film about a jealous twin sister who takes her obsession to the extreme when she poisons her loveable sister. This film is visually striking with bold, dreamlike colours and some fantastic camera angles and movement, often utilising wide angle lenses. The colours and aesthetics of both sisters are really nicely contrasted, one sister is very flowery and pleasant whereas the other sister is very moody and eerie. Both of the sisters are played by Iva Janžarova which gives them both a very uncanny feel, her expressions are often very theatrical which adds onto the weirdness of the new wave aesthetic. I really loved those colourful hallucinatory sequences, Juraj Herz is a legend when it comes to surreal scenes. The score was also a very important part of this film, it really accentuated the weird excitement of the film. Overall this was a pretty wonderful film, I’m loving the Czech new wave so I need to watch a lot more!
