The documentary does not exist
To attempt to capture objectivity with the camera is to embark on a futile task. “A grin without a cat” does not embark on such task.
It captures real events, but does not portray them as such. Real people, real places, real events on screen, yet no intention to find any kind of concrete truth. Instead Chris Marker strives for something that the camera is far better at capturing. Emotional truth and in this case, the truth of struggle. Struggle against monolithic institutions. struggle against our own ideas. Struggle against the unbearable, weight of realizing the world isn’t willing to change yet. Struggle against ourselves to keep pushing forward anyway.
Masterful use of montage simultaneously contradicting and defining, criticizing and celebrating, reminiscing, and looking forward.
A Mosaic of political struggle.
Struggle is not something one chooses to partake in. It is something we are all intimately interconnected in.
We struggle because we must.
