This film reminded me of my great-grandma. She’s in her eighties, she’s Māori, and she’s known as “Grandma” to over 110 blood-related people. Although my grandma isn’t a filmmaker like Merata Mita, she most certainly is an important wahine Māori who has gone through all sorts of ups and downs in her life. I saw my grandma in Merata Mita, as did I many other Māori I know. Merata’s story was truly inspiring and this film her youngest son made to show it deserves to be seen by more people from all over the world. Te Ao Māori is beautiful and through Merata Mita I was reminded of how people like her and my grandma so desperately want us to protect it.
