What a nice surprise! I wasn’t expecting all that much from The Wandering Earth but it managed to work on me through one of my new favorite sci-fi concepts I’ve seen from the past decade. And with the amazing technical work, solid performances, and script that did the job well enough I’m shocked by the mediocre reception but most importantly happy to call myself a fan. These are really some of the space vfx I’ve ever seen which is saying a lot with how many space-set movies I’ve seen now, the shots of Jupiter and Earth’s atmospheres coming together were gorgeous and the spaceship here is also one of my new favorites. It looked great outside of the just the wide space shots too with some shockingly great action sequences and impressive cinematography all throughout, I have to commend of course director Frant Gwo but also cinematographer Michael Liu and the whole vfx team for making this look as good as it did. It’s a simple one that doesn’t leave me with too much to say but I really had a great time and even if I’m shocked by the mediocre reception I do understand it, it falls into some character and dialogue-writing cliches but aside from that I struggle to think of any issues I had which leaves me feeling quite positive on it overall. This made a lot of money so of course there’s a sequel and normally I wouldn’t be too interested but Frant Gwo decided to expand on this with a 3 hour movie which I’m very intrigued by, I might even check that out tonight because I’m just so interested to see how a story in this world could constitute that runtime, either way I had a lot of fun with this and if you’ve got the inherent bias to sci-fi like I do I’m sure you’ll have a blast.
