My third Bette Davis/Irving Rapper collab and although this certainly didn’t reach the heights of Now, Voyager I was still very impressed by it! In an age where poorly written scripts are far too common seeing something like this is so refreshing, not a popular film at all yet the script works really well and I was captivated by basically every word. I can’t help but imagine this inspired Pearl, not only the plot but the final shot alone is enough to make me think Ti West at least saw this. Bette Davis is brilliant per usual, easily the most unhinged performance I’ve seen of hers thus far and it was a blast to see her give a touch to a role I hadn’t seen from her yet. I thought the rest of the cast was impressive too, Gary Merrill, Anthony Steel, and Barbara Murray all added something nice to this alongside Bette. A pretty simple plot that shows its hand as it goes and I don’t have a problem with that, it’s entirely effective paired with the nicely written script and it made for an entertaining time. This is as easy to enjoy as movies come, it worked for me as an afternoon-unwind and I recommend it because I’m sure it would for someone else too.
