The 1939 edition is a rare case of a Hollywood remake being better than the original…
Now this does makes sense– after all, this film was released in 1910. Is that an excuse for the horrible storytelling: yes, have I seen “films” ~released during the same time that did manage to that better– also yes. What this movie also has– was a fairy-tale like world building, that made “Oz” feel as a magical place– just like the wizard of Oz would do nearly 30 years later (but better ofcourse).

This is strange. It is the Wizard of Oz story, at least parts of it, and you recognize that but your brain is telling you that it's all wrong. I wonder what the kids who saw this in 1910 thought as the adults of 1939 when they saw the more iconic adaptation. Hell, I wonder what Baum himself thought. This one just wasn't for me.
