A decent spy action drama, largely aided by the talents of Jessica Chastain as former junkie turned elite assassin Ava. We follow Ava as she begins to reckon with moral qualms about her kill targets, her estranged family, and eventually members of the organisation she works for. It’s not a particularly unique story but this film delves much more into the protagonist Ava’s personal life and expends much of the screen time into developing a more rigorous backstory for her. The film creatively used the opening credits to deliver a brief montage of Ava’s past, a great primer to get situated in the film and get acquainted with the main protagonist. However one main issue was the lack of exploration into Ava’s moral qualms about her targets, it seems to be the root of the entire plot, where she breaks protocol by talking to the targets before kicking them. Yet we never get any information from these targets and it’s not explored further. The subplots that came out of the family added to the story but turned it much more into a drama. All the various subplots meant that the main plot was less developed as the family subplot did not really intersect with the main action plot. The overall action was quite entertaining and the hand to hand combat was great to watch. A fun watch overall.
