My final film of TIFF 2019!

Ema is a film about destruction. Both literally and figuratively, physically and emotionally, even outward and self-inflicted; each decision from our cyclically destructive protagonist radiates a pulsating energy towards the characters around them. It's a film that's just as wildly unpredictable as it is darkly comedic, using familiar thematic touchstones such as love and loss to bring forth the devilish interior workings. It's absurd in its overall premise but still intimate when it calls for it, which adds a realism to each excessive performance and character role.

It's a brightly colored and spastic dance of human emotion that's just begging for further inspection into its nuance. Ema (both the character and the film itself) seems to exist in a heightened reality where relationship conventions become toyed with and bonds become tested, but the end result still culminates in the creation of something new. Destruction can be a form of creation, but at what cost to yourself and others? It's a creative, thought provoking, and unpredictable experience that draws you in from the very first frame and continues to drip with atmosphere and thematic weight. Loved it!

Insane, horny, and psychosexual movie. I genuinely could not have predicted some of the turns this film takes, and I’m happy it did. A very visually appealing movie, with its color choices and shots. Gael Garcia Bernal is so sexy ouuurghh ANNND he plays a pathetic husband like, what else need I say…
Edit: After sitting on this for a day, I would’ve liked to have seen more interaction between Polo and ema/gaston, they literally paint up this kid to be the devil incarnate, but it’s kinda/sorta waived off as a kid acting out due to neglect from these two dysfunctional parents. Which, yeah sure, they’re here now, but I truuuuuly don’t think he ends as perfectly bow-wrapped as it did, like there needs to be growing pains, which I guess we can imagine went on once the credits rolled, but I digress. Like she got polycule annnnnnd the kid back man like PICK one you big and greedy ass…
