“a is for apple, b is for her, c is for coed, d is for dead and f is for failing to keep your head!”
i was excited in the next entry of deep cuts, just because i really was curious in an americanised giallo flick, with its detective/police/murder mystery structured plot, helmeted killer and it’s general sleaze, it’s just a fun watch. i find myself more drawn to the giallo side, rather than slashers so that was a big plus for this movie. this film completely prioritises the suspense and dread of the killer, and it’s got some strong atmosphere and a great style. the cinematography and the score make an effectively moody horror flick. it’s got a very gritty look to it, which is always nice to see. there’s a couple stand out moments here and there, one being obviously the beginning scene where the woman gets her head decapitated, but also the transition from a severed head to a piranha pool, which was a really nice sight. it’s quite distinctive in its premise, with a cool niche motive connected to rituals studied at a local school, and for that it gives me something fresh. while i will praise the production of the film, to me it’s one of the weakest giallo slashers i’ve watched as of now.. one main letdown was the gore.. for a video nasty this really has near to no gore, which was highly disappointing as a high amount of kills are offscreen, this failed to deliver on its explicit gore and death. this films pacing and acting is uneven, a lot of the acting felt wooden and the pacing was just too slow. despite the killers menacing appearance, the identity is obvious.. and there’s no real mystery. and the finale was underwhelming af! i was just wanting it to end by the third act, but i can still respect it as a giallo-slasher blend.
