The last few Wes Anderson movies I’ve watched weren’t exactly what I expected when I started this marathon. The first ones I saw completely bewitched me, so I assumed it would keep feeling that way. But obviously I started with his most popular films, so expecting that level every time was probably a bit naive. Recently his films have started to feel very similar to each other. Different themes, different plots, but structurally they almost move the same way. Sometimes it feels like if you swapped a few scenes between them, it wouldn’t even be that noticeable. It’s still visually gorgeous and unmistakably Anderson, but the formula is starting to show more than before. I still enjoy the style, the dry dialogue, and the strange characters. I just wish the emotional impact hit the same way those first films did.
