Blind swordsman/masseuse Zatoichi befriends a young woman returning home with her baby. When gangsters mistake her for Zatoichi and kill her, Zatoichi determines to escort the baby to its father. He gains the reluctant help of a young pick pocket and together they travel to find the baby's father. But they do not reckon on the father's reaction to their arrival, nor on their own growing feelings for the child.

I like it whenever the Zatoichi series swaps hands between directors. Seeing a new take on the character, however minimal, is great. Seeing Zatoichi grapple with being a potential father-figure here adds for a lot of great melodrama and, more importantly for me in this case, comedy. This just might be the funniest Zatoichi film and all we needed was a baby

The comedy and action were fine, and it's interesting to see how Zatoichi's Japan has changed along with the character as these movies go forward in time, sometimes years apart, despite production being so fast. Zatoichi however is starting to feel like a prop just bringing us to each set piece and story and not focusing on him as a person like the first movies which is what made me get really invested.
Kenji Misumi returns to direct, and he does a pretty good job like the first one, but I already voiced my qualms with this movie. The action and comedy were good, and I liked his friendship with the women and the friendship they have while transporting the baby. Something I find weird is just how melodramatic every side character is and how everyone is extremely violent for whatever reason.

Really liked this one trying something new
The fighting in the title is clever implying a fight we’ve come to expect from these films, but actually meaning more of an internal fight
It was a lovely premise and very refreshing
Unfortunately, i found myself at times feeling embarrassed on behalf of the film for thinking I was more emotionally invested than I was
These films are at there best being wacky, fun and clever and really thinking outside the box - this was only half of that
The score was doing a WHOLE lot trying to convince me something was sad or something but the film just hadn’t done it right yk
I hope they explore a more sentimental story in future films, but just do it in a bit of a cooky-er way I suppose I think they would be really fun
