This is honestly better than I expected, I am finding there isn’t too much of a difference between the beloved and obscure Iwai. It all has the same quirky plot threads, melancholic tone, and relationships that form through a mix of chance and purpose but are ultimately fragile. He has a story that he likes to tell, character types he likes to use, and he’s damn good at what he does.
I’ve seen 9 of his films now and they can be pretty clearly divided into vibing kids (Hana and Alice, Fireworks), mental patients (Swallowtail, Lily Chou), and lovelorn adults (Love Letter, Rip Van Winkle). This film particularly almost feels like a soft remake of Love Letter and, although it’s far less visually interesting, it isn’t that much worse. Just a bit clunkier and with less well integrated melodrama (a truly awful score really hurts this film). It’s little twist to the formula is that it makes the nostalgia inherent to all of Iwai’s work explicit, which often is poignant. 2020 was such a god awful year for films that this is in my top 10.
I’m sorry but I can’t take Hideaki Anno seriously in this I just hear Jiro and it takes me aback. Iwai in Ritual >>>>. His character is so funny tho he just does shit.
