I've known this movie since it was released because it's a hungarian-ish movie (Maybe I've seen a couple scenes in hungarian too).
From this point on it's easy to say that this movie's main punch is the style and visuals. It's really creative and innovative for an animated movie - It's a mix between Picasso and Salvador Dali and it coudn't have been better. Every character is unique, and their design is awesome, my favourite is the mafia head's design. I really liked how his eyes are part of his hat. At first I thought that even though it's an animated movie it has some nudity in it which is for me is quite unnecessary (and I think if it's do not make the plot forward or expand the main message than it should not be included). But after the ending my opinion shifted a bit.
Considering it's plot - It was all a dream.
Ruben Brandt has acute schizophrenia, and his whole journey with his band was a dream/hallucination due to his troubled childhood. His father experimented on him and after many years it took a toll on him eventually. I think that he had romantic feelings for Mimi. This is because of his "alter-ego" Mike Kowalski. They are the same person, but Mike is his subconcious and everything related to his subconcious is in the movie(women motifs, snails, paintings etc).
The ending was a bit rushed, not to mention Mike's character - Let's just say that he slowly disapperead after "their" mother's confession about "their" father and the CGI sometimes was a bit wacky, I think they shouldn't have used it that much - but after all it's still a great watch
Very good movie
