The Chambermaid follows the everyday working life of Eve as the cleans a luxurious hotel.
I really thought I was going to enjoy this much more, especially after the first 10 minutes or so. It really reminded me of Perfect Days or The Florida Project where not much really happens but the visuals and seeing the mundane everyday brought to life creates something special. Unfortunately though The Chambermaid just didn't really scratch that itch for me the way I had hoped it would.
One slight annoyance was the version I watched seemed to not show subtitles for every bit of dialogue, it didn't matter that much since it's pretty clear what's happening but still annoyed me.
I did really like the muted cinematography style, it's not very grand, but the way certain shots are framed are really satisfying and drew me in from the beginning. The contrast of the luxury hotel and it's guests compared to the cleaning staff who are all but invisible is where The Chambermaid shines. They way the relationships between the cleaners are tied together by favours, and helping eachother out financially through their side hustles is done really well and highlights how desperate many of them are improve their situation.
I'm not exactly sure what was missing for me, I think the characters left me a bit wanting. With the runtime it has I think there's time to explore Eve and her colleagues, there's some good stuff already but I just wanted a little more.
