if george méliès, terry gilliam, and david lynch could have somehow collaborated on an early 2010’s youtube sketch.
like the certified hood classic hundreds of beavers (2022) that this film preceded, the tightly knit cast and crew’s camaraderie create such a unique charm that is lost on many films today. i’m amazed by some big productions and mainstream releases, but i really admire how work such as brickson cole tews’ and cheslik’s can coexist with something like the aesthetically comparable the lighthouse (2019) while being tonally and financially night and day. the beauty of cinema to me is that i can safely say i enjoy what both have to offer me, yet like them for two completely different reasons.
the same can be said for lmm in terms of hob, this film does obviously lean into comedy (who is ryland but a silly little big guy after all), but theres more than JUST that genre. we get a little musical with it yet VERY surreal and confronted with doses of horror (which does bring me back to old youtube videos a la don’t hug me i’m scared, but way less disturbing).
the laugh-a-minute, straight up comedy (almost pantomime) feel so closely connected to beavers doesn’t really happen here, the lighter feel of hob gels better with me after seeing them both. this is NOT a write off of this film at all obviously…
but alas lake michigan monster, while for a more niche audience than what was to come, is still worth a watch if you love when films blend the silly and the surreal!
* the cold shower after the bleak journey of the lighthouse, if you will.*
