Under the Roofs of Paris is a bit of a mixed bag. While it’s technically notable, the story presents a rather run-of-the-mill narrative.
Both the sound and silent sequences are impressive of their own right, especially considering the release of the film, and they blend surprisingly well. Some shots a truly great while it does tend to be a bit too static in its camerawork.
The central conflict of the film does however not create enough momentum in the story to match the film’s imagery. The performances are as well questionable, seeming amateurish at times.
There’s a lot of merit to Under the Roofs of Paris, but it does prioritize its stylistic choices over the substance of the narrative. Nevertheless, it’s still an interesting watch.
