In Yang's completely surreal MAHJONG, which combines five different languages to illustrate Taipei as a commodity-based world.
Everyone and everything can be purchased, sold, eaten, and discarded, aside from love.

I was left speechless by the film's depth, writing, excellent construction, and fully realised characters.
I would argue that it is one of the best examples of what cinema should look like.
There are so many quotable lines as well.

Perhaps I'll see those movie accounts on X post them when the Blu-ray comes out.

Probably the best film in which the Hard Rock Cafe is a central location. Virginie Ledoyen should have been a global household name.

my second Edward Yang film, and this is a great satire while also carrying real emotional depth. it explores foreign perceptions of Taiwan, along with urban life, love, father-son relationships, and of course business and greed. the only problem i had with the movie was the poor acting from the foreign cast, but thankfully those characters appear less often in the second half
