Soundtracked by: The Ballasted Orchestra - Stars of the Lid, followed immediately by Virgins - Tim Hecker… highly recommended
I love that the director’s initial reaction to Art Deco—as is all people’s—is to depict people walking on the sides of its blocky works of architecture as if they were stairs
Rich people in the age of the commodity/consumer: exceptional products! exceptional talent! and exceptional to all who came before! it’s not about lineage, power, “exploration”, nor fame (these are merely prerequisites for the rich, defined in a previous time), but rather how these tools can be used for entertainment to create a cutting edge both envied and glorified—and upheld by service work… this is about the production of the Now that has never happened before but remains terminally incomplete and unfulfilled… this film is an excellent, and blistering, deconstruction of bourgeois society
I hate to randomly bring up Werner Herzog but I think it’s funny how his films are often compromised in the same way old movies typically are, where the exploitation behind the scenes is palpable in what we see… his are just more self-aware
