I hate to admit it, but I found this documentary utterly fascinating.
Director Phillips, not a name synonymous with subtlety, is at this point in his burgeoning career closer to contemporaneous agent provocateurs of American youth Larry Clark and Harmony Korine. While that seems dangerous on the surface, FRAT HOUSE seeks to subvert the excellent formalism of KIDS for example by projecting a more down-market, amateurish frame. The endless shots of brutish, douchey young men in group shots seem to this reviewer to represent Phillips' initial thesis, about how far young men go to be a part of a whole. Those shots are, however, only somewhat effective before becoming endless and I have to say, rather gratuitous (along with the HBO-friendly nudity), and about halfway through I found myself wholly checked out from what I was viewing. That shouldn't suggest boredom, though.
Indeed, FRAT HOUSE is disgusting. It's wretched, it's deplorable, it's reprehensible. Yet, it is an important artifact. Films like this not only show the horrors of young men's prurient lechery, but how the dicks of yesterday are the pricks of today.
Obligatory disclaimers:
What a bunch of fucking losers (Frat guys).
There is more to life than getting laid.
In the battle of Pussy Vs. Prick, Pussy always wins.
