30 for 30 #1: Kings Ransom
The trope of a generational talent player leaving a team for a bigger market team is part of every sport. But there is a legitimate case to be made that none of those trades in any other sport comes close to matching the influence and impact that trading Gretzky had. Because he was arguably the most dominant player ever in ANY league. when he gets asked in the movie, how many championships he would’ve won he stayed in Edmonton, Gretzky says he could’ve won four more and I think that’s under selling it. But I do also think that there’s a case to be made that D rise of the NHL in the 90s in 2000s wouldn’t have happened. Had Gretzky never left Canada
Very, very good documentary and a great way to start watching through all of the 30 for 30 documentaries again. It’s not the most exciting one, but it’s a interesting story told well nonetheless.
