I’m not surprised but disappointed in myself for giving this 4 stars when I watched it the first time 5 years ago.
Young Jacob was just getting in his groove as a loser cinephile so I can’t be too upset, but disappointed for sure. In my defense, Flight Club follows the exact blueprint for a movie where every rewatch is better than the last and you pick up on more details. I bet in 2031 I’ll say the same thing on my 3rd watch.
Knowing the general theme of the story lets you appreciate the storytelling and the little details that David Fincher throws out throughout the film. Getting to see this on a huge screen with the 4K remaster was just the cherry on top. Each scene was so crisp and the sound design was perfect.
I think what really stood out this time around was the small subplot around anxiety. Brad Pitt is this free spirit that is trying to coerce Ed Norton into stopping all his worrying. Worrying and anxiety have this unrelenting grasp and hold over all our actions and choices in life. Kind of beautiful when you really think about the contrast between the two of them. Devil and Angel almost on each shoulder trying to navigate this schitzophrenic life experience. Well that’s how i interpreted it at least.
I hope Fincher gives us more of this next year just like he did with Se7en last year and now Fight Club in 2026.
