In a Swedish village, situated in a rural idyll, a father, mother and little daughter are preparing breakfast on a Sunday morning. The family is looking forward to the boat trip that is to follow. The little girl's thoughts are already completely on the water. But there is no sugar in the house, so the mother sends her little daughter to the neighbor across the street to quickly get some. Two villages further on, a young man is filling up his car with gas so that he can drive to the Baltic Sea with his girlfriend. In their convertible, the young people feel blithe and free on the country road and race towards the village where the little girl is just crossing the street with the sugar to return home.

To Kill a Child

“the man who killed a child knows that this silence is his enemy.”

this was very powerful for a nine minute long short film, it reminded me of one of those adverts that are awareness for road safety.

werner’s directing is so fascinating and the voice overs highlight the plot to us perfectly so of course we aren’t lost in the nine minutes 😭 the scenery of what i can only assume is sweden is stunning regardless of it being in black and white.

i feel so much sympathy for the mother who literally lost her child only because she forgot to get sugar cubes, powerful. there is definitely something poetic about this movie.

This was such a rollercoaster… at first I was like, okay slay the score is so pretty. I love classical instrumentals for noir movies. Then I was like okay, slay! A film on routine and celebration simplicity and natural beauty and the beauty of family life. Now I’m sad….. it’s not a pretty film. Only a short Swedish film on fatalism and everlasting guilt. How happiness and the simplicity of life can be someone’s downfall. Nothing lasts… not a laugh, not the sugar, not a child’s life. Nothing is permanent. Nothing should be taken for granted
