To Kill a Child

In a Swedish village, situated in a rural idyll, a father, mother and little daughter are preparing breakfast on a Sunday morning. The family is looking forward to the boat trip that is to follow. The little girl's thoughts are already completely on the water. But there is no sugar in the house, so the mother sends her little daughter to the neighbor across the street to quickly get some. Two villages further on, a young man is filling up his car with gas so that he can drive to the Baltic Sea with his girlfriend. In their convertible, the young people feel blithe and free on the country road and race towards the village where the little girl is just crossing the street with the sugar to return home.

Le calme, l'innexpressivité et la fatalité dans la voix du narrateur est si dévastateur que cela m'a un peu faire rire, je l'avoue. Il est quasiment minuit alors pourquoi m'infliger cela ? Je n'aurais Jamais pensé que Netflix puisse proposer un court métrage suédois des années 50. C'est inespéré.

Why does Netflix have a 1950s Swedish short film about how to kill a child but they cant even keep Good Will Hunting. Crazy stuff.

“the man who killed a child knows that this silence is his enemy.”

this was very powerful for a nine minute long short film, it reminded me of one of those adverts that are awareness for road safety.

werner’s directing is so fascinating and the voice overs highlight the plot to us perfectly so of course we aren’t lost in the nine minutes 😭 the scenery of what i can only assume is sweden is stunning regardless of it being in black and white.

i feel so much sympathy for the mother who literally lost her child only because she forgot to get sugar cubes, powerful. there is definitely something poetic about this movie.
