A fun concept, quick and witty dialogue, and two great leads make Old Acquaintance a more than acceptable Bette outing, and while the script and fantastic chemistry between Bette and Miriam definitely puts this in a higher class I did have some issues with how the story played out over the whole movie. Starting off I really had high hopes for it, the idea of pitting Kit and Millie against each other through their writing styles reflecting their personalities was truly a stroke of genius, I loved seeing Bette’s more grounded and sensible character represent the quality over quantity artist and Miriam’s emotional and high-strung character representing the opposite, I only wish they had continued with that dynamic and not gone and focused in on characters like Preston and Rudd who, although brought to life nicely by Young and Loder, in the end just took away from the incredible magic of Bette and Miriam’s feud. The story’s ultimate direction is my only real problem with the movie though I still adore the parts of it with how these two characters were written to spotlight the strengths of their lead actresses and the technical work was great from the well-framed shots to especially the gorgeous score from Franz Waxman, it’s always sad to see a movie miss the mark on its full potential but this one still had a lot of good going for it.

This one is for anyone who’s ever had a best friend who fucking hated them.
Bette Davis is super hot and surprisingly subdued in this. Miriam Hopkins is irritating as hell and I wanted to shake her, too.
