"your touch makes this pussy drier than sandpaper. i can't fucking wait to kill you."
i know october's over, but horror movies are for every season idc. freaky had been on my radar for a while, considering my love slashers, and this is honestly my favourite one i’ve watched in a while. from the director of happy death day, it was a no brainer i’d enjoy this. it’s a completely campy horror comedy with a unique premise as slashers go, and a playful adaptation of the freaky friday trope, except in a slasher format which was really interesting. i always love when slashers have a lighter tone to them, and this was honestly a perfect example: like is it really a good slasher if it doesn’t have a nice level of comedy in it (there definitely are good slashers without comedy, but it’s always better when they do). i think the reason this movie is as funny as it is is due to its performances, featuring a tall filled out serial killer who’s actually a teenage girl within, and then a teenage girls who’s actually a cold, sociopathic killer. the comedic timing is really spot on here, and both actors have some really interesting mannerisms. this movie doesn’t take itself seriously, and that may be its biggest advantage. it blends a more thrilling suspense, R rated gore and nice spirited comedy which creates a fully entertaining experience. behind it’s really creative kills, there’s still some nice things underneath, featuring some genuinely heartfelt moments rarer in these films, and has some commentary on stereotypes and sexuality throughout highschool. while i wasn’t like blown away, i had so much fun watching film, with some really great gore and some nice characters.
