pictured above: lilo is disney, myrtle is my expectations for this movie.
my expectations were pretty low coming into this movie. live actions have almost always been a miss. it was opening weekend and all the show times and seats were basically empty. so i had to convince some people to come watch this with me otherwise it would basically be me streaming it to myself on a giant screen…
and boy did disney beat my expectations. i thought it was a super enjoyable and cute film, and that the CGI was really good. it had cute moments and cute dialogue. it also wasn’t a 1:1 riff of the original. but that’s actually more of where my problem lies with it…
at first, i thought they had given nani a better ending in this movie. in the original movie and series, nani pretty much gets screwed over having to take care of her sister and never gets to live her life or achieve her potential. the live action gives her a “happier” ending.
but it’s been 2 days since i watched and ive had more time to process the ending. and i think the live action misses more of the point of one of the core messages of the original lilo n stitch: subverting colonial values and showing the strength of the hawaiian natives. the original is a love letter to the strength and community of the hawaiian people even in times of hardship. this modern live action changes make it much more okay with government intervention and modernization.
im not trying to go on a crazy fence and say that the remake is pro government and american values > cultural values political propaganda but… it definitely didn’t help.
i think there’s a world where nani gets a happier ending that isnt so assimilation-ist. like, why does her college have to be in mainland america? there’s no way hawaii doesn’t have decent marine biology programs. 🤷
anyways i’d probably have to think more about this and as i do it may affect my score more. my initial thoughts are good cute kid movie. messes up some of the original themes. probably should have a worse score cus of that but i still enjoyed it.
ohana means family. and family did get left behind in this case. but zoom made it better? lol
