I mean… she took matters into her own hands.
There is something about the way Lukas Dhont captures moving bodies, the colorography, and the relations between the characters that makes us question everything we are watching.
As we’ve always said, gender is a spectrum. The binary of the movie has a purpose. It is not a movie about a trans person, it is a movie about a trans dancer.
Artists are doomed, maybe you have to be inside this world to really understand it. There’s a certain pressure that young dancers face when arriving at a renowned dance school that is a part of our world, that you can’t not ignore. Lara is struggling as a person, and as a dancer. She lives in constant doubt about having her place in this world because of her identity and her talent.
Talking about human relationships in this movie, they are exemplary. There is not once, a judgement about her identity from the adult characters.
While teenagers are just being repugnant.
However, there is one thing that I do not want to see in a movie and it’s underage nudity. There is no point in showing her genitalia and it truly makes me question the true purpose of this movie. It is pedophilia.

I was such a huge fan of Close by Lukas Dhont but this is not it. I saw some do the reviews before watch this and was shocked to see that a lot of trans people were really not a fan of this. I didn’t understand why until the last 10 minutes of the film. The whole film is about the suffering that gender dysphoria causes in a person but it leaves out the love trans people receive. It’s just a very unnecessarily bleak film. There is something to be said about how this is a movie made by a cis gendered white male. I’m sure there are a lot of trans people who contributed to the film but I don’t think this landed at all. The film culminates in a really shocking moment which didn’t feel earned at all. The film is well directed but I don’t think Dhont was a good fit with this subject matter.
