Olympic figure skating concluded today with the women’s free program, so this felt appropriate, lol. Somehow I remember this particular DCOM feeling more impressive when I was a child who didn’t know the first thing about how competitive figure skating actually worked, but despite knowing better now, Go Figure is still a fun goofy nostalgia trip. It’s got your classic tween ice hockey/figure skating rivalry, a soundtrack stuffed with mid-2000s girl-power anthems, and even a Kristi Yamaguchi cameo!
The way the movie decided to portray the Russian figure skating regime was pretty corny and off-base though. I could feel myself cringe watching a 14-year-old girl jump at the chance to be tortured into Olympic perfection. There’s no way our girl Katelin would have made it onto the Olympic team with just a bunch of double jumps! I will forever find the fact that so many figure skating-centric movies continued to use the 6-point scoring system well past 2004 incredibly funny, too. What was up with that?
Also I just have to say that Katelin’s parents absolutely SUCKED. They were so disinterested in her passion for skating, and faithless enough in her talent to actually take bets on how quickly she’d fail at her training scholarship. Her mom even openly admitted to being jealous of her own daughter! Lady, you’re 35! Seek therapy and stop taking out your insecurities on your teenager. Honestly, with family like that, who needs enemies?!?
