“There is landscape even without deeper meaning”

Take out the couple playing the piano/drums and this is a perfect film. The longest hour and sixteen minutes of your life but I’m very glad they feel long because the film lets you think about everything you see.

I’m lucky enough to have been to the Sahara Desert and to have spent a few hours among the nomads that are seen for a few minutes in the film. It’s truly an incredible way of life. There are little to no worries out there. It’s a vast region free of the constructs that exist in the rest of the world. It is empty and so beautiful. The children run free with pets and friends. It makes me think “where did we mess up along the way?”. We could have such different lives if not for some of the ridiculous constructs of Western society.

I’m so glad Werner Herzog made this. I don’t think people realize how diverse and beautiful this world and its people are. This film provides the opportunity to correct that. I wish I understood the narration more but I still appreciate what I was able to get from this. There’s just so much beauty in it.

I applaud the effort, but so much of the film reads more like an artist gets high in the desert and makes a movie. The imagery gets split between working well to tell a story that fits within the narration and then equal parts nonsense. It always feels like it’s on the cusp of being groundbreaking or innovative and then just gets muddled again.
