You can tell that everyone had fun making this, and that Lubitsch did whatever he wanted, but there was a point where everything just kinda dragged and it got a bit boring, which is sad because the first two acts are hilarious (not saying the third one isn’t, but I just felt that it went on longer than what it should’ve). Also the ending didn’t really feel that deserved tbh

Not entirely sure what happened in this, both it was definitely chaotic and visually unhinged compared to where Lubitsch has been lately. Nice to see Pola Negri actually be able to let loose in a comedy, similar to Ossi Oswalda, rather than her more serious historical epic performances.

15 film fra 1921 – #13: Die Bergkatze

Absolutely adored this framing! Most of it was done through cutouts, like the entire thing was Ernst Lubitsch joyously scrapbooking a movie. I do think that it’s satire of Weimar Germany was too tame and at 80 minutes it still seemed too long, but it mostly made up for that with a hilariously bawdy romance. I really liked this!

Only my second Lubitsch, but I’m still convinced he could be an all time fav.
