I absolutely love this film. It's hard to imagine that the director of Mad Max made this, but then I remember that he also directed Happy Feet and it makes sense (on another note, according to my mum, my favourite film when I was very little was Happy Feet; little me knew George Miller rocked).
I think I'm just a sucker for Tilda Swinton, fantasy elements and period pieces, so everything about this film was predestined to be right up my alley. The plot is told mainly through flashbacks in the first half, while the second half takes place in present-day England (a huge downgrade from Istanbul). I adore the cinematography and visuals; the CGI is awesome and the colour grading is so rich and jewel-toned, and complements the magical atmosphere. The costumes, sets and locations are gorgeous and the makeup/VFX add an extra layer of charm. Something I pay very close attention to is the score or soundtrack, because in my opinion it can make or break the film, but the score of this film is hauntingly beautiful and led me down the rabbit hole of Matteo and Andrea Bocelli's music.
Tilda and Idris Elba had so much chemistry and were a pleasure to watch together. I don't think the film would've worked as well as it did without them, and both are excellent actors. I'm not familiar with most of the cast as a lot are Turkish, but everyone did fantastically.
Three Thousand Years of Longing didn't get nearly enough love when it was released; if you've ever thought about what three wishes you would ask for if you met a genie, watch this film.
