“if you like, i’ll keep him, but i don’t like you.”
could not agree more with you, unnamed sex worker. the father in this movie is a piece of garbage.
movies like this are hard to watch because of how demanding they are to the viewer, and it’s weird because this movie is only about an hour and a half. the lack of dialogue in this is what makes the film hard to focus on for me though.
it jumps into a story at the beginning but doesn’t give you any details as to who is who or what is going on. you get loose little fragments of the story and have to figure it out yourself but it’s not easy to do so. here i am, at the end of the film, and i’m still confused as to who two of the characters are. once you’re able to figure out certain things about the movie, it does get a little easier, but a lot of the motivations for the characters remain unclear.
take for example isabel ruth’s eduarda. i can’t begin to figure out why she cares so much for the father and the baby, why she’s so willing to let him into her home. from the first times we see him he’s a pretty terrible character. he’s never around to support tina, he keeps trying to sell his child, and he wanders aimlessly through the dirty streets of fontainhas. yet, eduarda gives him opportunity after opportunity.
vanda duarte as clotilde is the best actress in this film. despite how little she talks, her character is incredibly easy to connect with because despite her impoverished lifestyle, she still tries to take care of not only everyone in her immediate household but also for tina. it’s a selfless type of love that aims to provide for others when you can’t even provide for yourself. you see how weary she is throughout the film but not once does she complain about her circumstances.
maria lipkina is interesting as tina because she’s also going through so much. she’s poor, her partner pays no attention to her or their child, and she see’s no way out but to take her own life. she feels trapped in a situation that only seems to get harder every day. it’s no wonder we’re exposed to a handful of her suicide attempts throughout the film.
overall it is a very bleak film in how it shows these day to day situations with little hope for improvement.
