When it comes to rating Catholic films, my standards aren’t that high. I don’t usually mind the cinematography or the technical polish. What matters to me most is the script and the story.
This film chooses simplicity, and that simplicity is its strength. The words carry the soul of it, echoing the purity of St. Francis and the way he spoke. There’s no excess, just honesty that feels plain but powerful.
As I was watching, I found myself thinking not only of St. Francis but also of Pope Francis. The film made me see how deeply the pope’s intentions mirror the saint’s—wise, simple, helpful, and above all, a true shepherd. It almost made me see them as equals. And for the first time, I understood why St. Francis is his favorite saint
And by that, I'll eternally cherish Pope Francis and The Flowers of St. Francis as my first Rossellini film.
