31 Days of Horror, Day 6: The Woods Are Lovely, Dark and Deep
I had no idea what I was getting into with this one, but it ended up being one of the most unique and poignant examinations of shared grief that I've watched this year. How do we deal with incomprehensible loss? Do we blame ourselves, knowing we might've done things differently? Do we shove our grief down, and lock it in a cage? Do we isolate ourselves, and hide away from the the ones we love? In the case of Elin and Tobias, it's all of the above, and as such they spend most of the film being tormented by ghosts, manifestations of their mutual past, unable to escape and doomed to experience unrelenting pain over, and over. The metaphor might fall flat for some but it simply works for me. And the final thirty minutes of the movie offered up some of the most tragically beautiful and soul crushing imagery I've seen in a long time.
