Plays a terrifying premise with the broad strokes of a Lifetime thriller but it’s anchored by a great trio of actors. Still, I feel like the right course with this would be to focus on the mom - she’s the audience surrogate not Busey. Otto Sanhuber and Danny LaPlante are two real world examples ripe for fictionalization. The over complicated I See You, the disturbing Sleep Tight, Angst, Bad Ronald, Crawlspace, Black Christmas, etc. all do the motif better but this is a Busey showpiece and that’s enough even if its domestic thrills are kind of on The Stepfather’s level.
I had to work with Mr. Busey and it was harrowing in an entirely different way but he could dial it in and deliver (when he wasn’t going through mood swings, making insane script suggestions, singing random songs, and arguing with his wife).
