Hello my movie watching friends! I am back!
It’s been a busy month, but I am back with an absolute banger. Apollo 13 has forever been one of my favorite movies. I’d venture to guess I watched it as a young lad with my dad and rewatched it every single time it was on cable.
It’s been a few years now since I had last watched, but this time in IMAX! Tickets were booked well in advance (I’m talking months…), and I have been heavily anticipating this showing.
There’s something about this movie that just hits in every single way for me. The slight American propaganda for American Excellence, the engineering and problem solving, the period piece nature, and of course the space travel all just make my dopamine receptors fire on all levels.
The great part about rewatching movies is picking up on new things and recognizing some of the nuances that you never saw before. As I grow into the film bro that I am becoming, and maybe already am, I notice this more and more as I rewatch my favorite films. Details I noticed this time around for Apollo 13 included Lovell’s selfishness for achievement, NASA operating as a military machine that runs on purely on public opinion, or the monumental stress that flowed through the families of the astronauts.
The last of those points were certainly present to all viewers, but I think missed them a lot as a kid watching this. As I grow up I relate more and more with the families. What goes through their heads as they watch their husband, dad, son fly through space with complete uncertainty is terrifying. I think age has changed my perspective on the movie, moving away from the inspiring story of saving astronauts through science, imagination, and sheer will to a view that understands how important family is and how if the mission was not a success failure would have truly destroyed families.
Thanks for reading y’all! There are some bangers coming up soon so please stay tuned.
I know this is my flick post, but for reference this is my 500th review and 600th diary entry since I started tracking movies back in 2020
