I remember watching this on release day in theaters, my that cliff hanger at the end had me fuming but now I look at it as a net positive because it really is a good cliffhanger for the next movie. I loved the scene with Smaug, very well done. The choreography is also phenomenal especially with the barrels and the limited use of weapons. The big negatives on this film is the use of Legolas for nostalgia purposes and the elf/dwarf forced relationship. It was just too out there for me. All in all still a very good film and a great second film to an amazing saga.

Today marks 12 years since its release, and while the first two acts lack the pacing, the sense of “adventure” and magic of the first installment, the third act are some of the best sequences I’ve seen in a movie theatre period. Also, Smaug is the fiercest and most beautiful dragon in all of film.

And even after 12 years, I still suffer from PTSD after that cliffhanger when I was a kid💀💀💀
