Holy fucking fuck what the actual fuck!! I promise I’ll stop cussing from here on, I just needed a moment to digest this magnificent piece. Häxan might just be the greatest movie ever made! Benjamin Christensen did not play around about this project – so well researched with such a powerful structure and so brightly executed.
Witch hunts have been around since the beginning of times and although we might be tricked into believing that we, as a society, have evolved, as we grow – not only of age, but as our psyche develops – and start seeing the world in its fullest and truest form, it becomes clearer that our civilization lives in a never ending cycle of hatred, prejudice and oppression.
This phenomenal production displays the evolution of witchcraft, from its pagan roots to its confusion with hysteria in the rawest form; making the uneasiness, discomfort and agony portrayed on screen so palpable that makes it impossible to put into words. An absolutely intoxicating documentary on a topic that if not avoided and disregarded, is simply poorly depicted.
Overall, the most striking bit off of the entire film, at least for me, was this line by itself: **“Under häxeriets tidevarv är det farligt att vara gammal och ful, men det är heller icke ofarligt att vara ung och vacker.” — “In the age of witchcraft it was dangerous for a woman to be old and ugly, but it was also unsafe for a woman to be young and beautiful.” **which remains truthful to this day, just as well as most (if not the entirety) of this fictionalized documentary. Men will keep on being pigs and not knowing how to keep it in their pants and women will keep on being victims of the privileged and favored gender; and just as it is portrayed in this piece, women like hunting witches too.
